A series of human subjects experiments were conducted, where subjects navigated through two large unknown buildings to target locations with and without the HMD. The hypothesis was that a head-mounted display improves the efficacy of a user navigating through an unknown challenging indoor environment to target locations. It was found that use of the HMD reduced navigation time by 62%, reduced the search distance traveled by 55%, and improved subjects' understanding of the building layout and ability to map target locations by 55%.Many elements of this are learned during training: firefighter manuals provide descriptions of different types of ... and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as hard wired communication and public announcement systems (FDNY, 1997).
